“86”
by Eric Smith (2000)
One day I decided to write a song based on one of the Psalms. I closed my eyes, extended my right index finger, and flipped the Psalms open with my left hand. Upon opening my eyes, my index finger was pointing to Psalm 86. I was glad it wasn’t Psalm 119. Inspired by U2’s ingenious idea of titling their song based on Psalm 40 -“40”, I followed their lead and called this one “86”.
Bend
your ear and listen to me
I
am afflicted and you know my needs
To
you I cry all day long
To
you I lift up my song
For
you are good and you’re not ashamed
To
answer us when we call on your name
And
though sometimes it’s not clear
We
can always trust that you are near
Incline
your ear an hear my prayer
In
my trouble I need you there
Teach
me your way and I’ll walk in your truth
With
all my heart I’ll give thanks to you
Forever
I will glorify your name
For
your kindness towards me is so great
Your
lovingkindness I will proclaim
For
your love towards me is so great
Forever
I will glorify your name. . .
