Bittersuite

By Eric Smith (2000?)

I wrote this song when some friends of mine were undergoing a very difficult and painful time in their life though no fault of their own.  These sorts of circumstances remind us that we will never be completely happy in this life.  It will always be a strange mixture of bitter and sweet.  Strange in the sense that we won’t always know exactly why we suffer some things and others do not (that’s the bitter part); sweet because in spite of our sufferings we can be substantially fulfilled in this life because we know Jesus Christ.  My friends were and continue to be faithful followers of Jesus Christ.  I admire their example.

Sometimes the walk seems so far, seems so hard

Other times it seems so sweet, the  ground beneath my feet

Most of the time its in between,

A strange mixture of bitter and sweet. . .

Sometimes I feel so shy,  I want to hide,  don’t want to try

Other times I feel so good, I’d stay up all night if I could

Most of the time its in between,

A strange mixture of bitter and sweet. . .

I know there’s more outside these walls, one day we’ll rise up from this fall

But until the day we’re set free, we’ll live in a room called bittersuite

In a room called bittersuite

Face the bitter, enjoy the sweet

In a place that’s in between

Putting faith in the unseen

But don’t lose heart, as we decay

We’re being renewed day by day

Our pain is real, our pain we share

But to what awaits, it can’t compare

Most of the time its in between,

A strange mixture of bitter and sweet. . .

In a room called bitter-suite

Face the bitter, enjoy the sweet

In a place that’s in between

Putting faith in the unseen,

In a place that’s in between

We put faith in the unseen
