By Eric Smith (2000)
I was inspired to write this song as I was defragmenting
the hard drive of my Dad’s computer. It
struck me (as I was playing my guitar, fixing the computer, eating lunch,
trying to relate to my parents, and making sure my children weren’t killing
each other) that life can be very defragmented if we let it. We are in serious need of defragmentation in
our culture. We need to prioritize the
important stuff (God, family, friends, suffering people, etc.) and put the less
important stuff in it’s proper place.
Too
many distractions, Too much to do
Too
many options, That take me away.from
you
Too
many details, too much information
It’s
hard to focus, can’t stay tuned to one station
It’s fragmentation
Too
many places and people to see
Invisible
chains, I thought I was free
But
still you call me, should I answer the phone?
Turn
on some music, can’t stand to be alone
How
can you say it doesn't matter anyway?
How
can you say it can wait for another day?
But
what would we talk about?, There's nothing's on TV
But
still I watch it, Afraid to sit and think
I
guess I'll try it, defragmenting my mind
Access
the hard drive, You could purge The corrupt files
I
know you think you've got to keep the pace
But
who is it that asked you to join this race?
I
think I've found a way out of this maze
I've
heard a message from another place
I
don't think we've got time to waste
One
day we won't have another day
How
can you say it doesn't matter anyway?
How
can you say it can wait for another
day?
Defragmentation
